Inclusion criteria:

• Male or female outpatients at least 65 years old.
• The patient is currently diagnosed as moderately to severely depressed.
• Has had at least one prior episode of Major Depression.
• Are able to swallow all required medication without opening or crushing.
• Are able to use an automated voice response system as part of the clinical visits.

Exclusion criteria:

• Have any prior history of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
• Have moderate to severe dementia.
• Have a history of substance abuse or dependency within the past 6 months.
• Has had ECT within the past year.
• Discontinued hormone replacement therapy within the previous 3 months.
• Has been treated with fluoxetine (Prozac), unless it has been discontinued 30 days or more before the initial evaluation.
