Drop-in Center
On Our Own of Montgomery County operates a consumer-run,
self-help, drop-in center for adults with serious and
persistent mental illness. This consumer program operates
seven days a week and offers peer support groups, educational
forums and social/ recreational activities for its members.

Cultural Diversity – Provider Language Capabilities
Montgomery County, with a population
of 890,000, recognizes and celebrates the diversity
of its citizens. In 2000, 44% of Maryland’s foreign-born
residents resided in Montgomery County. The County Executive
endorses the guiding principles for culturally competent
services and the management of a vibrant, diverse workforce.
All private sector agencies and organizations are actively
seeking culturally diverse staff and training. Faith-based
groups offer outreach, counseling, and housing to ethnic
minorities.
The County funded and operated
services provide assistance to those who do not have
access to mental health services; for example, those
adults who are “undocumented.” The County,
in partnership with the private sector, is committed
to reducing the stigma of mental health and increasing
the culturally competent services.
