A cavity wall can be determined by studying the pattern or bond that the bricks have. If all bricks are laid with longer edges ('stretchers') facing you then it is a cavity wall. If, however, the wall has been rendered or plastered and the bond is not observed, then the most effective method to determine its structure is to cut a small hole in the exterior to a depth of around 130mm. If there is no visible cavity through this method, then the wall will be considered solid. This can be verified by measuring the wall's thickness in door openings and windows that reveal.
